Abstract: The book provides a critical evaluation of he crucial aspects of Malawi's second democratic elections. The different chapters take the elections as a litmus test for the state of democracy, evaluating not only the electoral processes as such, but also the performance of the political parties, the civil society, the media, the churches, and the use of political language. The majority of the articles published here were originally presented at a seminar titled "Malawi after the second democratic elections" which was held at Chancellor College, a constituent of the University of Malawi. Among other things, the book deals with 1999, political challenges and reforms, management of the electoral process during the second multiparty elections, reflections on party ideologies and programs.
