Abstract: COMPASS is a manual on human rights education produced by the Directorate of Youth and Sport of the Council of Europe. It is designed to help people who want to begin teaching or learning about human rights, making no assumptions about readers' prior knowledge on this topic. There are five chapters focused around fifteen main themes representing major human rights concerns. The themes are: children’s rights, citizenship, democracy, discrimination and xenophobia, education, environment, gender equality, globalization, health, human security, media, peace and violence, poverty, social rights, and sport. The five chapters are organized as follows: (1) Introduction to the term "human rights education" and what it means. It is also gives a brief guide on how to use COMPASS. (2) This chapter is a collection of forty-nine activities of different levels of complexity, related to fifteen areas of human rights. (3) “Taking Action” is a chapter for those interested in being more active in promoting human rights. (4) Chapter four provides all necessary knowledge about human rights and contains international standards, documents, and regulations on this topic. (5) Chapter five includes supplementary information on the fifteen global themes.
