Abstract: Education for democratic citizenship is a part of the national educational strategy of the Republic of Macedonia. Civic education is taught as a special subject during the seventh and eighth grades as part of a History and Civic Society course. There is a tension between history content and civic education content because there is not much time to teach both within the curriculum. At the time this research was conducted, there were still no civic education standards, but educational materials had been developed.
