Abstract: This document highlights that the aims and principles of Civic, Social and Political Education (CSPE) accord with those of the Junior Certificate program. It emphasizes the importance of active and cooperatively structured learning methodologies in enabling and empowering pupils to become active and participative young people. In discussing the scope of the CSPE course, the syllabus highlights the following. The course is structured around four units rather than a list of topics: Unit 1: The Individual and Citizenship; Unit 2: The Community; Unit 3: The State—Ireland; and Unit 4: Ireland and the World. This allows teachers and pupils scope and flexibility to select and deal with issues such as gender equality, racism and xenophobia, interculturalism, the environment, development, work and unemployment, poverty and homelessness, minorities, and conflict situations, such as Northern Ireland. Objectives are outlined in terms of knowledge, concepts, skills, and attitudes/values.
