Abstract: The national goals for Australian schools provides general direction for education in Australia. The first goals—the Hobart Declaration—were stated in 1989. A decade later the Adelaide Declaration was made to guide educational systems and policy makers in the production of educational policy, school curricula and curriculum frameworks. Within these goals are found specific statements that relate to civics and citizenship education, including Goal 1.4, which states that students should be active and informed citizens with an understanding of Australia’s system of government and civic life. The national goals are also linked with the national report on schooling in Australia, which is produced annually.
